Written On 2009 Sun Dec 20To Follow Or Not To Follow On TwitterCategory: TwitterThere are people who use twitter to build massive amounts of followers. Then there's people who actually use Twitter. Now it's true if you don't follow everyone who follows you, you won't build up as many twitter followers. A lot of them will unfollow you. A lot of them will automate an unfollow through special automated tools. However, if someone is following 10,000 tweeters, do you think they are really going to read your tweets? Probably not. So do you really want a massive list of followers who don't even read your tweets? This is where I suggest a two part strategy. Setup a separate account if you are going to use automated tools to build up followers. This account will be your bet that Twitter might innovate, stop follow spam with capchas and maybe grandfather your 59,000 followers account. Setup a separate account where you actually use Twitter and connect with people. When Myspace was first getting started, I saw people selling accounts for $1000. Why? Because the account had 30,000 friends. Was it a good buy? I don't know. I didn't buy it because I couldn't pinpoint the quality of the friends. If a bot was used to generate them, I doubt I would have made much from the investment. The same applies to Twitter. Just because someone has 50,000 Twitter followers, does it really matter? If you just focus on quantity without any regard to quality, you can mislead yourself. I came across a client who purchased a traffic generation service. She was thrilled she was getting such low prices. Well, it turns out, the traffic was faked. The service used different bots to mimick real traffic. She later found out. Just keep in mind the number of twitter followers doesn't mean anyything if they are all generated by automated bots. Written By Drew Sire Permalink + Comments |
