Choosing Your Blog Domain Name

Category: Blogging For Starters

An old friend contacted me the other day about starting an e-commerce business. She wanted advice on purchasing some domain names from Go Daddy. What I am about to share with you isn't taught by any internet marketing books. Keep in mind, this revelation applies to blogs, e-commerce sites and any website that will use search engine optimization to generate traffic. Keep in mind, running a blog or e-commerce site requires business skills. However, a blog is a more simple than an e-commerce site.

In the beginning, all domains names were created equal. The web started out like the wild west. You made a name for yourself through courage by standing out. Nepotism didn't help too much. As the market becomes more complicated, nepotism (link juice, link building, neighborhoods etc...) becomes much more important.

Yes, all domain names are created equal. However, not all domain names grow up equally. Some people will flock to your website just because the name resonates with them. Some will come because a friend referred them. Some will agree with your message.

Can you start a blog with a fresh name and ignore domain name aging? Yes. It just takes more work just like it takes more work to overcome challenges of rising out of the poor class. You'll be competing against the corporatacry and all the nepotism the system is built on. Give it enough time, the web will become just as competitive as the current markets leftover from the industrial age. Now is the time to start. We are still living in the wild west days of the internet. Domain names are extremely cheap right now. $35 for less for a name is a steal. Even $1000 for a resell domain name is a steal when it has back links.
