how to start a blog

I Started Internet Marketing While In College

Then I dropped out of college. I didn't want to take on the student loans. I started finding ways to make money on the web. I started designing websites and looking for customers in yahoo chat rooms. Now, I run my own websites. I went through a real tough time. It made me a stronger business person, stronger writer, stronger sales person, stronger everything. I don't know where the economy is headed. However, I know I will get stronger whether through blogging or other internet marketing methods. When things get tough, the tough get tougher, and they get blogging. Forget the corporate jobs or false sense of security. Start finding a way to create something yourself.

How To Be An Inspirational Blogger

How do you find the spirit to be a blog magnet? Just look at all the things in the world you wish you could change. Then start blogging about one. I visit a few social networks on the web where I plug in and find the latest stories on topics I love. It helps me connect with others and still present my opinions. Then I take that inspiration and post it to my blog. The best topics are highly controversial, cutting edge and polarizing.

Pick A Passion To Create A Blog About

Along the way, I've started some blogs that were duds. Pareto's law really works. You'll get 80% of your results from 20% of your ideas. A big reason those projects didn't take flight was I didn't pick a subject I was truly passionate about. I now use a self written formula to assess all my ideas before starting a new blog. Each item is worth one point. If the total doesn't add up to at least 60, I won't start the blog. Here is a more detailed breakdown on the blog start checklist.

1. Does the blog have a minimum potential of 30k visitors per month?

2. Can the blog generate multiple streams of income like e-books, services, products, memberships etc...?

3. Are the keywords realistic to target?

4. Is there residual income opportunity?

5. Am I passionate about the subject?

6. Can I jump-start traffic with an existing domain?

7. Is my profit margin at least 50%?

8. Can we offer any automated customization?

9. Is our blog and products/services unique enough to prevent price wars?

10. Is there enough supply of the products/services?

What To Do Before Starting A Blog

Hold the concept of genuine content and commercialism in your mind at the same time. Quite a few marketers in the community polarize themselves on one side. I've seen people try and launch businesses based on paid blog posts. I've seen bloggers say you're going to hell if you make any money off your blog. Try and stay balanced and blog about what is true to you. You need both traffic and quality content. If you pick a low traffic niche, you'll create an uphill battle. If you pick a great niche with traffic but aren't passionate, you won't keep your readers. You really need both. I know a lot of web 2.0 community members are against search engine optimization. However, its important to stay balanced between genuine content and commercialism. If you swing too far either way, you won't help the world or blog-o-sphere. If you try to game the system without regard to quality, you'll just spam people. If you go too far the other way with social marketing, you'll just get caught up in the high school popularity contest on the web. If you are offering value, you won't have trouble collecting money.
